The European Union (EU) has decided to strengthen the prevention of animal diseases after facing several outbreaks in recent years. Since COVID-19 was confirmed in the United Kingdom, only a few cases have been reported in other countries. Map of the EU further investigations revealed that there were no contacts between these herds and that they did not move animals to or from them.

Map of the EU was set up and it shows that the first cases occurred in Great Britain. The map showed no other spread or animal movements to suspect further infections. However, intensive monitoring is still required because several months have passed since COVID-19 was confirmed and there are still no reports of contact animals or animals moving.

The choice for not taking any actions came about due to limited information on whether other countries were similarly exposed because many herds were not tested at the time. Now, with increased abilities to detect this disease, these regions should be tested within six weeks, increasing chances to find infected herds or contacts

In 2010, exceptions were made for movements within certain regions of Scotland, England and Wales due to the special circumstances caused by the foot and mouth disease outbreak at that time. This meant that during this period contact between different areas in Great Britain could take place without any restrictions on movement of animals between different farms in Great Britain. Under these rules, affected

The rapid spread of COVID-19, an infectious agent which can cause fatal pneumonia, killing up to 30% of infected birds, has prompted the Map of the European Union (EU) to take protective measures.

The disease, which is highly contagious between birds, was first identified in the UK in February 2016 after it killed 10k turkeys. It was found among pigeons at a market in Surrey and later on several farms across England. On 29 September 2017, two cases of COVID-19 were confirmed on two turkey farms in different regions of Spain. The Spanish authorities immediately put control measures into effect to stop its spread through contact tracing with other potentially infected premises within a radius of 3 km . This included placing restrictions on movements until the source of infection could be determined and eliminated or controlled appropriately.

Which countries are in EU?

In Great Britain, a total of 26 cases have been confirmed in different regions. In addition, some other countries in the EU reported cases of the disease, although at low levels. These regions are shown on the Map of the European Union.

The table below shows all affected areas within each country for comparison purposes. The table shows that Spain is affected by more outbreaks than any other country since COVID-19 was first identified in Europe. However, it should be noted that this outbreak occurred before Spain joined the EU and therefore no movements were permitted between these regions and other parts of Europe at that time. Map
